Purpose of Position

 

The Cafeteria Manager will be responsible for the overall operation, coordination, and management of a dynamic school food services program. This role uniquely integrates three key components: Technical Vocational Education (TVE) Culinary and Pastry Programs, School Nutrition Program (free snacks/small meals), and daily cafeteria operations serving students throughout the school day. This position ensures safe, nutritious, appealing, and efficient food service while providing meaningful learning opportunities for students in culinary training programs.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

· Oversees daily cafeteria operations, including food preparation, service, and cleanup.

· Ensures efficient service flow to meet high-demand periods (before school, lunch, breaks).

· Monitors food quality, freshness, and presentation.

· Manages cash handling, point-of-sale systems, and inventory control (if applicable).

· Ensures compliance with local and provincial nutrition guidelines and food safety standards.

· Develops balanced, nutritious, and appealing menus suitable to the student population, incorporating culturally diverse and inclusive food options.

· Manages food budgets and controls costs to maximize program sustainability.

· Monitors inventory levels and orders supplies as needed.

· Works closely with the Culinary and Pastry Arts instructors to integrate student learning into the cafeteria operations.

· Assists in planning menus that support students’ skill development and curriculum outcomes.

· Coordinates student participation in food production and service as part of their practical training.

· Supervises and supports cafeteria staff, volunteers, and TVE students working in the cafeteria.

· Responsible for adhering to the health and safety procedures.

· Collaborates with the Culinary and Pastry Arts instructors, the Divisional Nutrition Teacher, and the Nutrition Coordinator to ensure food waste is minimized through effective planning and redistribution strategies.

· Performs other duties as may be assigned to support the efficient operation of the cafeteria.

 

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

Skill and Knowledge – Required:

 

· Diploma or certification in Culinary Arts, Food Service Management, or related field.

· Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in food service management (preferably in a school or institutional setting) or an equivalent combination of skills and experience.

· Food Handler Certification.

· WHMIS or equivalent workplace safety training.

· Strong leadership skills.

· Strong organizational skills to effectively plan and execute snack and/or meal preparations for a considerable number of students.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to interact with students and staff.

· Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, ensuring smooth and efficient cafeteria operation.

 

Skill and Knowledge – Desired:

 

· Previous experience in food service, cafeteria management, or nutrition-related roles.

· Experience in a large urban school division.

· First Aid/CPR
