Union Status: Out-of-scope

Location: Administration Office

Hours: Regular Full-Time

Annual Salary Range: $78,098 - $91,357 depending on qualifications

Purpose of Position

 

Under the direction of the Director – Facilities and Operations, the Safety, Health and Environment Officer is responsible for promoting, educating and implementing safety, health and environment initiatives, policies and procedures across the Division.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

· Promotes and educates the importance of safety, health and environment.

· Develops and implements Division safety, health and environmental programs and policies.

· Conduct inspections of all Division facilities and grounds to identify hazardous conditions and takes corrective actions as necessary.

· Investigates all incidents / accidents / violent incidents that occur within the school division.

· Reviews the Workplace Safety and Health programs and procedures of contractors working for the Division to ensure their compliance with governmental regulations.

· Participates in and assists with school directed safety and health committee meetings.

· Assists during emergency evacuations and other emergency situations.

· Ensures personal protective equipment (gloves, eye goggles, non-slip overshoes, respirators, etc.) and training information are available to all staff.

· Provides training and support to all staff on safe work procedures and building security.

· Maintains chemical inventories in Canada Safety Data Sheets for all science, industrial arts, art and custodial staff.

· Maintains the divisional safety & health website.

· Maintains hazardous materials database.

· Arranges, provides and assists with safety and health training of all staff and maintains training records.

· Assists the Human Resources department with WCB claims.

· Provides direction and leadership for all of the Division’s Workplace Safety and Health Programs including Workplace Safety and Health Committees, Working Alone, Hearing Conservation, Job Hazard Analysis, W.H.M.I.S.

· Develops and maintains a database of Job Hazard Analysis for all Divisional work classifications.

· Conducts indoor air quality tests, ergonomic assessments, noise assessments, lighting assessments and respirator fit testing for all staff as required.

· Assists school administration in the creation of emergency evacuation plans.

· Provide emergency responses outside of regular work hours when required.

· Performs other duties as may be assigned to support the efficiency of Safety and Health in the Division.

 

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

Skill and Knowledge – Required:

 

· Post secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or another related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Three to five years’ experience as a Safety and Health officer or administrator.

· Recognized certification in First Aid, CPR, AED and WHMIS.

· Familiarity with provincial health and safety legislation, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, National Fire Code, the Workers Compensation Act, the Canadian Labour Code – Part II.

· Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.

· Experience in developing and facilitating training programs.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to defuse conflict and deal with complaints and concerns effectively and professionally.

· Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with confidential information.

· Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

· Working knowledge of office computer systems (Excel, Word, Outlook).

· Experience conducting workplace inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and evaluations.

· Experience leading joint Safety & Health Committees.

 

 

Skill and Knowledge – Desired:

 

· Prior experience in an educational environment.

· Experience coordinating emergency preparedness.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

 

· Work involves some standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

· Ability to lift objects weighing more than 25 kgs.

· May be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, and hazardous/poisonous chemicals.

· On occasion may be required to work beyond normal working hours, with little, short or no notice.

· A weekend or evening shift may be required as needed.
