0.5 FTE Term, Occupational Therapist 

Effective as soon as possible until December 19, 2025

 

 

Occupational Therapist

  

The successful candidate will work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, serving students with significant physical and developmental disabilities.  Duties will include assessment, program planning to enhance functional ability, and consultation. 

 

Applicants must possess a license to practice occupational therapy in Manitoba, be eligible for membership with CAOT (Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists) and possess or be eligible for school clinician certification as outlined by Manitoba Education Citizenship and Youth.  Previous pediatric school-based experience is preferable. 

 

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory responses from both the Criminal Record Search and the Provincial Child Abuse Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of Occupational Therapist

 

Assessment of the following:

• Student's fine motor/perceptual motor/visual perceptual skills which requires observation of the
• Students in various locations in the school and the administration and scoring of standardized tests    
• Sensory integration and processing needs
• Feeding, self care and personal hygiene skills (dressing, transfers, toileting)
• Environmental assessments of classrooms, school accessibility
• Environmental assessments for worksites/bathrooms for high school students on work
  placements and other students going on field trips.
• Student specific equipment needs (wheelchair standards, adjustable desks and chairs etc.)
• Technology needs (hardware, software, adapted toys, etc.)
  
  Equipment:
  
  
• Order and maintain equipment (technology and student specific)
  
  Training:
  
  
• Train teaching assistants assigned to specific students re: programming exercises and materials provided by the occupational therapist.
• Inservice staff e.g., the ALERT program, technology support, etc.
  
  Other:
  
  
• Develop health care plans for students who are at risk for choking.
• Facilitate Special Needs and Technology related programming (OT accessibility portion)
  
  Reporting:
  
  
• Provide written reports of initial assessment findings, suggested intervention and follow-up to teams including school staff, parents and physicians.
• Contribute to the Individual Education Plans (current level of performance, goals, strategies and evaluation). 
• Provide year end status report.
• Communicate with the child's physician in accordance with professional licensing
  
  Programming/Follow-up:
  
  
• Programming development for teaching assistants and staff to carry out on a regular basis.
• Provide specific materials required for programming and monitor progress

        Divisional/Interagency:

• Participate in Divisional Committees as appropriate
• Liaise with clinical staff/community based agencies as appropriate
