TEMPORARY ASSISTANT CARETAKER

 

HOURS:  4 hour shift, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Monday to Friday

 

START DATE: As soon as possible

END DATE: Until the incumbent returns

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

BASIC FUNCTION: The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for the routine cleaning, comfort and safety of the school’s physical facilities. The Assistant Caretaker provides assistance to the school’s Head Caretaker with the physical activities of operating the school building.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIP: The Assistant Caretaker reports to the Head Caretaker in charge of the school. In the absence of the Head Caretaker, the Assistant Caretaker accepts direction from the Caretaker 1 and/or Principal. The Assistant Caretaker also accepts direction from the evening Custodial Co-ordinator. At all times the Assistant Caretaker fills a service role to students, teachers and persons in the school community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Level of Education:

Minimum education level of Grade 12 or equivalent.

 

Experience:

Institutional custodial experience is desired.

 

Skills and Abilities:

Reading, writing and verbal skills in the English language are essential. Individual must be able to communicate effectively in English.

 

Must possess a general knowledge of institutional cleaning methods and products and have the ability to operate such cleaning equipment as polishers, auto scrubbers, etc.

 

Must possess the ability to interact effectively and positively with students, staff and the general public.

 

Must be available to work either day or afternoon shifts during breaks and in-service days.

 

Must possess the ability to work independently and co-operatively as a team member.

Physical Requirements:

Must have good general fitness to fulfill the representative duties of an Assistant Caretaker for the required shift. Must have the ability to pick up 20kg (45 lbs) and carry this weight 20m (60 ft.)

 

 

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

 

Maintains Cleanliness of the Facility

 

1. Cleans Assigned area according to identified procedures including sweeping, damp mopping, vacuuming, dusting and sanitizing to help ensure attractive facility.

 

2. Vacuums furniture, drapes, rugs and carpets and steam cleans as required.

 

3.Dust and/or damp wipes furniture, desks and window sills that are free of classroom material as well as woodwork, handrails, ledges, chalk rails and equipment.

 

4. Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, shower stalls, washroom fixtures and dispensers. Refills all washroom dispensers as required.

 

5. Cleans chalkboard brushes and chalk rails as required and ensure chalkboards are thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.

 

6. Empties pencil sharpeners, waste paper baskets and other garbage containers. Disposes of garbage daily into an external container in compliance with local laws and procedures.

 

7. Removes graffiti as soon as possible.

 

8. Cleans mirrors, windows and other internal glass surfaces.

 

9. Cleans light fixtures as required.

 

10. Strips, scrubs, spray buffs and applies finish to floors as required. Ensures floors are clean, attractive and properly maintained.

 

11. Provides a written report to the Head Caretaker when necessary, identifying items that require immediate attention (Eg. Buzzing ballasts, graffiti, broken glass, other vandalism, etc).

 

Maintains Equipment and Supplies

 

12. Cleans and maintains custodial equipment after each use: including but not limited to mops, vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, floor machines etc. Reports all malfunctions to the Head Caretaker.

 

13. Maintains adequate quantities of custodial supplies in assigned custodial closet and requests additional supplies from the Head Caretaker.

 

Providing Direction & Orientation to Casual Staff

 

14 . Assists in providing direction and orientation to the replacement staff.

 

15. Provides keys to replacement staff and ensures keys are returned upon completion of assignment.

 

Performs Related Duties

 

16. Maintains a positive working relationship with educational staff, students and fellow staff members.

 

17.  Visually checks the facility to ensure building security. Secures the facility and activates the building alarm system at the end of the shift.

 

18. Provides assistance and direction to groups using space within the facility.

 

19. Sets up furniture and equipment for conferences, lectures, special events and other user groups as identified on permits or as directed by the Head Caretaker and/or Principal.

 

20. Monitors permit activities in assigned areas. Makes available the equipment specified on permits, ensures that equipment is returned and reports any damage or problems associated with the activities to the Head Caretaker.

 

21. Receives and moves shipments, equipment, furniture and supplies as required.

 

22. Responds appropriately in emergency situations by performing repairs and clean-up within the limits of ability and provides assistance to trades or other service personnel as directed.

 

23. Remains on assigned premises for the duration of shift, unless otherwise directed by immediate supervisor.

 

24. Performs duties as assigned and scheduled during school breaks (Summer, Christmas and Spring).

 

25.Reports break-ins, vandalism and emergency situations to the Head Caretaker and/or Principal.

 

26.Performs non-routine cleaning assignments where possible, while covering permit activities on weekends. Ensures clean up after each activity.

 

27. Turns off lights in areas not occupied; perform similar energy saving measures as directed in Power Smart program information for the school

 

28.Must learn and use the Globally Harmonized System (HMIS) Hazardous Materials Information System and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

 

29.Other related duties as assigned by the Head Caretaker.

The formal performance appraisal and general evaluation of routine work is conducted by the Operations Supervisor in consultation with the Head Caretaker.
