EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT 3 (EA3)  

ASL INTERPRETER

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of school administrators and with the input of other professionals, Educational Assistants promote and support inclusive practices within Pembina Trails School Division. Educational Assistants work collaboratively in assisting students with diverse needs and abilities, fostering engagement in the learning environment.

Duties included in the role of all Educational Assistants:

1. Working within established school structures, including classroom management structures, behavioural rules and student expectations
2. Working with students with behavioural and learning challenges
3. Providing academic assistance to students in classroom, small group and individual settings
4. Delivering specialized or adapted programming to students under the direction of the classroom teacher and resource teacher
5. Providing documentation of students-specific program performance
6. Providing supports for students with challenging educational needs
7. Supervising recess and lunch duty
8. Supervising and assisting with the swim program, which includes entering the water
9. Administering student medication as determined by the student’s U.R.I.S. plan
10. Supporting students in community-based programs
11. Supporting students’ emotional, behavioural and physical needs
12. Being flexible in terms of adapting to students’ educational programming
13. Using augmentative and alternative communication
14. Facilitating the transport of students between education sites

Duties specific to the role of an EA3 ASL Interpreter include the following tasks:

• Providing classroom interpreting, platform interpreting and one to one or small group interpreting
• Assisting student(s) in the classroom
• Preparing student(s) for specific content area subjects including reviewing vocabulary, previewing videotapes, guest speaker presentations and gathering materials for use in the classroom
• Assisting student(s) with the academic outcomes as specified in their IEPs
• Collaborate with clinicians, classroom and/or resource teachers to collect information on the academic and behavioral needs of the student(s)

Qualifications:

• Graduate of a recognized accredited college or university program in ASL-English Sign Language Interpretation
• Ability to work as a team member with excellent interpersonal skills
• Thorough understanding of the language implications in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
• One or more years’ experience would be an asset; specifically, within a classroom setting
