Walking School Bus Chaperone
START DATE: As soon as possible
Reports To: School Administrators
Hours: Casual (AM and PM shift). Shifts can vary from 30 minutes to 50 minutes, but staff are paid for 1 hour of work for each shift.
Salary: $18.16 per shift plus 4% vacation pay
Language Requirement: English
Purpose of Position
Under the direction of the School Administrator(s), the Walking School Bus Chaperone works as part of a team to walk a group of children from designated pick-up location(s) to the school grounds in the morning and returns them to the designated location after school. The Walking School Bus Chaperone follows a fixed and safe route with designated “stops” and “pick-up times”.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Under the direction and guidance of the Administrator(s) collects a group of students and safely walks them to their designated school each day.
- Undertakes close supervision of the students, ensuring their safe passage along a public route to school.
- Oversees the safe conduct of students participating in the Walking School Bus program.
- While in transit accounts for the whereabouts of the students at all times and ensures their safe handover to the school each day.
- Models safe walking skills, safe pedestrian behaviour and street safety.
- Exercises judgment and monitors traffic flow when determining safe opportunities to cross streets with students while following the walking school bus route.
- Maintains focus and avoids disruptions while leading students to school.
- Communicates traffic and crossing rules and other safe practices to students assigned to a walking school bus.
- Reports any issues or concerns to the Administrator(s).
- Complies with all safety requirements, and wears all required and approved safety equipment including safety vest at all times.
- Follows policies and procedures of the Division, ensuring the safety of all students participating in the walking school bus program.
- Treats all information about the students as confidential.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned to support the efficient operation of the Walking School Bus program.
Skills and Qualifications
Skill and Knowledge – Required:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with students and others and have good English language skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Good physical condition, including sight, hearing and mobility.
Skill and Knowledge – Desired:
- Basic First Aid training.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- The role involves working in all types of weather conditions throughout the year.
- Cold weather clothing, such as a winter coat, ski pants, winter boots, gloves, toque, scarf, etc. are required during the winter months.
- Ability to walk long distances.
- Must be at the designated pick-up location at the designated time.
