Purpose of Position
The HVAC technician provides support to the department for a variety of repair and services necessary to maintain safe and efficient operation of all heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in the Division and provides assistance in the maintenance of plumbing systems in accordance with all governing codes.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Provides support for a wide variety of repair and services necessary to maintain and upgrade the Division’s HVAC equipment.
· Work includes (but is not limited to) installation, replacement, troubleshooting, repairing, developing plans, providing quotes, and testing of HVAC systems and their components.
· Assists in the supervision of HVAC contractors.
· Preparing boilers for inspections.
· Performs HVAC work for building renovations and minor additions.
· Makes recommendations for the upgrade of HVAC systems and components.
· Assists plumbing staff with work when needed.
· Prioritizes work to meet deadlines.
· Orders materials as required and verifies receipt of goods for invoicing approval.
· Makes efficient use of time and materials.
· Maintains records of work performed.
· Maintains Divisional tools and equipment in safe and good working condition.
· Ensures the worksite is maintained in a safe and orderly fashion.
· Works cooperatively with other divisional staff and contractors.
· Performs other duties as may be assigned to support the efficient operation of the Department.
Skills and Qualifications
Skill and Knowledge – Required:
· Gas Fitters License Level B.
· Commercial Journeyman HVAC and Refrigeration License.
· Several years of commercial experience in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning maintenance.
· Working knowledge of DDC control systems.
· General computer knowledge.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.
· Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Skill and Knowledge – Desired:
· Gas Fitters License Level A.
· Backflow Prevention Testing Certificate.
· Plumbing service and repair experience, as well as other related building maintenance skills.
· Work experience in construction and/or experience in carpentry, concrete, welding, hardware, small engine repairs, etc.
· Prior experience in an educational environment.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
· Work involves some standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
· Ability to lift objects weighing more than 25 kgs.
· May be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, and hazardous/poisonous chemicals.
· On occasion may be required to work beyond normal working hours, including weekend or evening work with short or no notice.
· Provide emergency response outside of regular work hours when required.
